Joe Saumarez Smith first rode a sportive at the age of 39 after his wife decided to enter him in the 2011 Etape du Tour from Modane to Alpe d'Huez, via the Col du Galibier. He founded Sportive.com soon afterwards, and wrote about cycling in the small amount of time he had between his work and family life. His fleet of bikes included a Condor Baracchi RL in the summer, a Condor Fratello in the winter and an ancient Kona Lava Dome "for when the weather in London gets so bad he is scared to be on a road bike". Joe passed away in 2025. This site is dedicated to his memory and most of all, his passion for cycling.
