SUMMARY:Marmotte Granfondo Alps 2026
DESCRIPTION:The next edition of La Marmotte Granfondo Alps is on 28 June 2026. \n\n\n\nEntries open 6 October 2025. \n\n\n\nLa Marmotte: The greatest European cyclosportive?\n\n\n\nFor many sportive riders the Marmotte is the ultimate European sportive. Around 7\,500 riders take part each year around the first weekend in July\, with the fastest riders completing in around 5 hours 45 minutes and the slowest taking anything up to 13 hours. \n\n\n\nLa Marmotte features three HC climbs over its 177km route and has a total of 5530 metres of climbing\, making it one of the toughest courses of any sportive in the world. \n\n\n\nThe Marmotte usually starts with a climb of the Col du Glandon\, which weighs in at 27.5km with an average gradient of 4.5% to a height of 1924 metres. From there you drop down (on a route so steep that it is not included in your overall time to try and stop riders from dangerously speeding) to the start of the Col du Telegraphe. \n\n\n\nHowever\, the 2021 edition removed the ascent of Col du Glandon with riders instead facing another classic: the Col de la Croix de Fer. \n\n\n\nAfter the descent\, the course proceeds as before to the Col du Telegraphe. \n\n\n\nThat leads to the Col du Galibier\, one of the most famous climbs in worldwide cycling. The Telegraphe/Galibier combination is 35km of almost continuous climbing at an average gradient of 5.48% to a height of 2642 metres. Towards the top of the Galibier the gradient gets up to 15% and on a windy or cold day it is brutal. \n\n\n\nThere then follows a rapid 47km descent to Bourg d’Oisans and the start of a final ascent of the 21 hairpin bends of Alpe d’Huez. For all but the elite riders this is usually a major struggle as the sun will be baking in the early afternoon – the 2013 Marmotte saw riders experience 44 degrees centigrade heat on this climb. \n\n\n\nHow to Enter\n\n\n\nEntries for La Marmotte 2026 open 6 October 2025. The date changes every year – as does the timing when it goes on sale – and we suggest you sign up to our newsletter which will alert you when registration opens. Entries sell out very quickly – often in less than a day. \n\n\n\nSportive.com aim to alert our newsletter subscribers within 30 minutes of entries going on sale…so do sign up and keep yourself informed about the Marmotte\, Etape and other legendary sportives and gran fondos. \n\n\n\nWe thoroughly recommend the Marmotte to anyone considering riding it. Organisers Sports Communication do a superb job of putting on the event on some of the most iconic climbs in worldwide cycling. This is a sportive that everyone should do at least once. \n\n\n\nCheck out the following Marmotte related articles: \n\n\n\n\nThe Marmotte route profile with detailed analysis of the 174km ride\n\n\n\nMarmotte package tour operators recommendations\n\n\n\nJim Cotton’s 2018 Marmotte ride report in which he finished 123rd\n\n\n\nJoe Saumarez Smith’s 2018 Marmotte ride report on how he abandoned after 100km\n\n\n\nJoe Saumarez Smith’s 2014 Marmotte ride report in which he did actually finish\n\n\n\nDan McCausland’s 2014 Marmotte ride report\n\n\n\nTimings for gold and silver medals in the Marmotte\n\n\n\nOur recommendations for the best restaurants in Alpe d’Huez\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDistance: 177 KM \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Website\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:L'Étape du Tour 2026
DESCRIPTION:The 34th edition of the Étape du Tour will take place on Sunday 19 July 2026.  \n\n\n\nThe course follows the route of Stage 20 of the 2026 Tour de France\, starting in Bourg d’Oisans and finishing with an ascent of Alpe d’Huez.  \n\n\n\nThe 170km route takes in 5400 metres of elevation gain\, making for one of the toughest editions yet. There are four major climbs on the route\, with Col de la Croix de Fer (2067m) serving as a warm-up for the legendary Col du Telegraphe (1566m) and Col du Galibier (2642m) duo. \n\n\n\nThen it’s on to the Alpe – but not via the iconic 21 bends; instead\, riders will take the less used approach up Col de Sarenne (1999m). \n\n\n\nEntries opened on Monday 3 November at 2pm French time (1pm UK). Standard entries are now sold out\, but it is still possible to enter via a tour operator or a charity place. See the event website for details. \n\n\n\nThe standard entry includes an atmospheric day’s riding on the Etape’s closed roads\, with rider timing and mechanical support\, and feed stations including a pasta party at the finish. \n\n\n\nL’Etape du Tour – cycling’s greatest sportive?\n\n\n\nThe Etape du Tour is probably the most famous sportive in the world\, and is the only chance each year to ride the same route as the pro riders in the Tour de France on closed roads. \n\n\n\nEach year around 16\,000 lucky riders get the chance to ride a stage of the Tour de France just a few days before the professional riders cover the same route. Always run on one of the rest days of the Tour\, the Etape du Tour has the same support cars and police outriders as the actual Tour. \n\n\n\nThe Etape du Tour is run by ASO\, who also run the Tour de France\, and the organisers tend to try and choose one of the shorter but mountaineous routes as their route. \n\n\n\nRegistration for the 2026 Etape du Tour opened on 3 November 2025. Usually there is a huge rush of registrations on the first day – it’s not unusual for L’Etape entries to sell out within hours of opening. \n\n\n\nOne of the hardest choices is to decide whether to go to the Etape as part of an organised group or whether to make your own arrangements. A good travel company may cost a bit more but it can make life an awful lot easier as they pick you up from the airport\, organise getting to the start and being picked up from the finish and often have their own feed stations along the Etape route. Read our guide to Etape du Tour travel operators to see who we recommend.  \n\n\n\nHowever if you plan well in advance and are part of a group of riders you will save a lot of money making your own plans. Remember that it is very unlikely that you will want to cycle home an extra 30km after finishing the Etape so making sure you are able to get home easily is important. \n\n\n\nCheck out the following Etape du Tour related content: \n\n\n\n\nOur guide to Etape du Tour travel operators\n\n\n\nAndy Lulham’s 2017 Etape du Tour report\n\n\n\nDan Baker’s 2017 Etape du Tour report\n\n\n\nPaul Hunt’s 2015 Etape du Tour ride report\n\n\n\nAlex Voake’s 2014 Etape du Tour ride report\n\n\n\nJames Andrew’s 2014 Etape du Tour ride report\n\n\n\nChris Walker’s 2014 Etape du Tour ride report\n\n\n\nSportive.com’s Etape du Tour index page\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDistance: 170 KM \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Website\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n	Related
