PARIS, France - We have received quite a lot of emails asking about when the 2014 Etape du Tour is likely to be and what the route is likely to be. As yet, we have not heard anything from ASO (the organisers) about the route but we are told that the announcement is likely to be in the first week of November.
Registration for the Etape du Tour is likely to open in the last week of November and we understand that organisers are going to stick to the one Etape option this year, having found that last year's total rider numbers of 11,475 was more manageable than having two Etapes of around 6,000 riders each.
With 10,624 riders finishing the 2013 Etape it will be interesting to see if organisers try and pick a tougher route this year as there were some complaints that the event was "too easy" (although we have plenty of feedback from riders who said it was a lot tougher than the route profile looked).
Judging by the early leaks about where the 101st edition of the Tour de France will be going, it looks like two serious possibilities are an Alpine stage with a finish on the Col d'Izoard (where the actual race is rumoured to be on Saturday 19 July) or a Pyrenees stage based around a climb of the Tourmalet or the Hautacam or possibly even both.
