Fans of Mango Bikes and their range of brightly coloured, customisable fixies will be excited to hear that the company is branching out with a new range of entry-level geared bikes.
Already well known for supplying durable and keenly priced single speed and fixed bikes, this is Mango Bikes' first venture into the world of derailleurs. The new 'Black Series' currently comprises a single, 18-speed model, available in a range of colours with an introductory price tag of £449. The bike features an 18-speed MicroSHIFT R9 groupset and frame geometry that is aimed at providing all day comfort, stability at low and high speeds and brilliant handling.
Finishing kit is courtesy of Mango Bikes' own Chasewood brand, who provide oversize drop bars, fully sealed hubs, and crankset to go with a Mango Bikes Velo saddle and KMC chain. C-Star provide the brakes, while customers can choose between standard 25c Kenda tyres or puncture resistant 25c Maxxis Re-Fuse tyres.
Mango Bikes describe the bike as "a great all-rounder, ideally suited to the rider looking for a way into the road bike world and equally as well suited to the all year round commuter with its strong double wall rims, mudguard and pannier mounts."
The Black Series Matte edition is finished in a hard-wearing and deep matte paint, black leather saddle, matte black deep dish rims and black componentry for a stylish and understated aesthetic. With steel frame and forks the new bike weighs in at a claimed 12.5kg, so it's not the lightest even at this price point - but the emphasis is on value and durability, and we can see this being popular with commuters, especially existing Mango Bikes customers looking to make the move from a fixie or single speed.
"Since launching two years ago we've seen quick growth in the single speed and fixed gear market, particularly online," says Mango Bikes' Jezz Skelton.
"We're now building and dispatching thousands of bikes a year to all over the UK and Europe. We've built a reputation for quality, simplicity, style and great value aiming our bikes at young professionals, students, lifestyle riders and entry level road cyclists, in fact we now see lots of experienced cyclists coming to us for something reliable, durable and fun which is a great sign!
"Going forward we hope to build on this reputation and become a world recognised brand which designs and builds great bikes for a variety of riders. Our 18spd Road/Commuter bike is now available opening us up to a wider market and we have lots more models in prototype, planned to roll out in the not too distant future."
