SiS have released a beefed-up version of their vastly popular GO energy gels in the form of a double espresso flavour which boasts a whopping 150mg of caffeine; twice the amount of SIS' regular gels.
The SiS range is grouped into two categories, REGO for recovery and GO for in-exercise nutrition and energy. The new double caffeine gels most definitely fall into the GO category.
The double espresso flavour is currently the only flavour offered in this double caffeine format. Choice in gel flavours is largely personal, but I would hazard that if you are hoping for this gel to fulfil your cycling fantasy of drinking an actual espresso whilst pedalling along, you will likely be left wanting. However, gels rarely taste like the real thing - just try SiS' cola flavour, or give it to someone you don't much care for to try. I would liken the double espresso taste to that of a strong mocha.
The gels also digest well, which is surprising given their high caffeine content. SiS packaging continues to be best in class, making it easy to rip the top off in your teeth as you whizz along. What is more, the sleek silver and bronze finish of the packaging will have your club-mates wondering what sleek bit of kit you are whipping out of your jersey pocket.
What is not debatable is the energy boost that the gel will give you. There is a noticeable difference from SiS' regular gels. The double espresso is perfect for those long winter rides, or even for summer attempts of Alpine climbs.
Overall, the gels offer a welcome top-tier caffeine boost for when you need just that little extra performance enhancement, whether that is for your big race or just blitzing a Strava segment. This caffeine boost, coupled with their easy digestibility and mocha taste, makes the SiS double espresso gels worth a shot for coffee fans looking to go the extra mile.
The SiS GO Energy+ Double Espresso gel retails for £9.89 for a pack of six 60ml sachets, available from most good cycle retailers.
