Irish gravel cyclists have a new event to look forward to in 2024 with the launch of Rebellion Gravel.

Set to take place in Cork - 'the rebel county - on the weekend of 23-25 August, the event will consist of two stages with riders choosing whether to race, ride or simply try their hand at gravel cycling, with overnight camping in between.

The new event looks set to join the Lakelander Gravel Grinder (5 October) and Galway Gravel Grinder (31 August) as a highlight of the Irish gravel calendar.

The weekender is a proven formula in the UK and further afield where events like Gritfest, Grinduro, Raiders Gravel and Muck n' Mac Fest attract sell-out crowds to enjoy 2-3 days of cycling amid a festival atmosphere.

Rebellion Gravel is being organised by Elite Event Management, the team behind some of Ireland's biggest road sportives including the Wicklow 200, Ring of Beara Cycle and Ride Dingle.

Route details and prices are still to be confirmed but riders can expect an 80km stage on the Saturday and 50km on Sunday, with a prologue ride on Friday to ease into the weekend.

There will be three categories of entry; Race, Ride and Try. The race will be timed from start to finish with neutralised zones on roads, while those in the 'ride' category will follow the same route as the racers but at a more leisurely pace and with feed zones.

The third 'try' category will feature shorter stages, and should be ideal for those new to gravel or just looking to enjoy the scenery over a shorter course.

Start times will be staggered across the three categories, and at the finish there will be live entertainment on the main stage.

Other amenities include on-site catering at the food village, showers and bike-wash facilities, mechanical support and first aid.
