Why ‘Thin Air’?
Well with 10,000 feet of climbing you will feel like you are at altitude! Unlike our 3 Rivers Classic, where the climbs are punchy, this sportive has nine long climbs with 5 above 400m and the highest point at 535m. Climbing starts early with the 4 km climb of Grindleton Fell at 266m. A few bumps later and you will face the ‘Cross of Greet’, number 79 on the official ‘100 Best Climbs known locally as Lamb fell this monster tops out at 425m but has a mini peak on route at 325m.
Following a largely flat route to Ingleton the road ramps up once again. This time it is the endless valley of Kingsdale reaching 480m. This single track road that follows the course of the river to its source high above Dent. Another decent and relatively short valley ride and you will reach the Coal Road and the fearsome accent of Dent Station reaching 535m. Only 70 km covered—Ouch!!
After Garsdale Head there is what appears to be an endless drag towards Newby Head with its 2 peaks at 314m and 437m. At Ribblehead a beautiful winding valley section follows before the final 8km climb of Bowland Knotts 414m (128km).
