The Maratona dles Dolomites is one of Europe’s most famous and tough sportives. It is not the distance that people find tough but the climbing, which totals 4,190 metres over just 138km.
The main course consists of the following climbs:
- Campolongo Pass: 5.8 km, Gradient: 6.1%
- Pordoi Pass: 9.2 km, Gradient: 6.9%
- Sella Pass: 5.5 km, Gradient: 7.9%
- Gardena Pass: 5.8 km, Gradient: 4.3%
- Campolongo Pass: 5.8 km, Gradient: 6.1%
- Giau Pass: 9.9 km, Gradient: 9.3%
- Falzarego/Valparola Pass: 11.5 km, Gradient: 5.8%
With over 9,000 entries each year it is still hard to get onto as it sells out within 24 hours of tickets going on sale.
Entries for 2014 will be available in October apparently with details of when tickets will go on sale published in September. Keep checking back at Sportive.com for details.
You should probably not consider the Maratona unless you have completed a decent number of sportives over hilly courses - if you have done the Marmotte in a gold standard time then you need not worry but if you are not experienced at mountains then the Dolomites may finish you off!
