Westerley Cycling Club invites you to join its reliability ride on Sunday 12th January, 2014.
This event started in 1998 when club member, Keith Shorten, recognised that sportive-type rides were the next big thing in cycling in the UK.  He then spent a series of Sundays devising a route to link the biggest climbs in the part of the Chilterns where we ride most weeks.

Until 2013 it was run as a club event.  Last year we have decided that Keith's route is too good to keep to ourselves and would like to invite other local, and not so local, cyclists to join us.  We've moved the date forward to mid-January to avoid clashing with the established Chilterns Classics series of reliability rides.

There are two versions: the main route is just over 107km in length (66 miles) with just over 1300m (4275ft) of climbing.  Or it is possible to turn left at Great Kingshill, cutting out the farthest loop to do the 58km 'lite' version.  This misses out the bigger climbs but retains the challenging ascent of Cryers Hill from the Hughenden Valley as well as a good few shorter ones.  It has 596m / 1950ft of ascent in total.

The main climbs on the 107km route are:

  • Magpie Lane up to Winchmore Hill.
  • Freith Hill
  • Dunsmore
  • Bledlow Ridge
  • Loosley Hill
  • Cryers Hill
  • Clay Street.

Both events are reliability rides which have a target speed range of 12.5mph - 18mph. That equates to about 3½-5 hours for the full ride and 2-3 hours for the shorter version.  We expect that there will be some fast riders but, for avoidance of doubt, the events are not races and everyone who gets home within the time range will get a certificate.  Riders will be set off at intervals to reduce the risks from riding in large bunches on narrow lanes.
