Mark Cavendish has revealed that he is looking forward to enjoying the North Wales scenery on his official sportive, rather than racing through it as he has in the past. With over 1,600 people already signed up to the new Rise Above Sportive, the event is proving to be as popular with the public as the man himself.
The former World and British Road Race Champion is heading to Chester and North Wales on Sunday 9th August to take part in his official sportive, which offers amateur cyclists the chance to take on one of three routes over 185, 120 or 80 km.
Starting and finishing in the heart of the world famous Roman city of Chester, much of the route takes place on roads that Mark will remember fondly from winning Stage Four of the Tour of Britain in North Wales in 2013.
"I am looking forward to riding my official sportive setting off from Chester this summer, with a stunning route out into Wales into the spectacular North Wales countryside. It'll be nice to be able to ride it rather than race it, and share the experience with everyone who signs up.
"We've put together not only a great route and an iconic start and finish location on the cobbles in Chester city centre, but my team are also working hard on the whole sportive experience, from the branding to the gift bag. I want this to be a premium sportive and one that I hope will become one of the biggest annual sportive anywhere in the UK."
All three of the Rise Above Sportive routes start and finish on the closed, cobbled roads of Chester city centre, with each ride heading west from the city and across the border in Wrexham, Flintshire, Denbighshire and Conwy.
