LONDON, UK - A 36 year old rider on the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 sportive died during the event, the organisers have announced.

Kris Cook collapsed at Newlands Corner from a sudden cardiac arrest and although he was treated by event doctors at the scene his death was confirmed later at the hospital he was taken to for treatment. The prison services official from Woking was riding his first long distance sportive.

He was riding with his girlfriend Nicola Tait who said that Cook had stopped at the bottom of the Newlands Corner hill climb complaining of chest pains but told her to carry on. "I'll meet you at the top of the hill Nic, on the left-hand side", was the last thing he told her.

Cook was part of a group of 12 riders raising money for Woking Hospice. Donations on his Just Giving page have reached £36,307 at the time of writing, massively above his £500 fund raising target. Tait told Get Surrey that she hoped lots of people would donate in Cook's memory.

"People have got to sponsor him, I really want him to raise as much money as he possibly can. It is going to help the family and the whole situation. I really want everyone to know he was just the most wonderful person, he was so beautiful, he looked after me and everyone," she said.

His mother, Sue Cook, said: "He was very caring and always cared about everyone else but himself. He didn't have a bad bone in his body and would always go the extra mile."

A memorial ride in honour of Cook will leave Newlands Corner at 9am on Sunday August 17.

Event organisers issued a statement saying: "The organisers of the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 would like to express their sincere condolences to Kris's family and friends. We will not be releasing any further details and would ask for your understanding in this matter. His exact cause of death will be established by a post-mortem."
